12.12.06 - Chess Recognised as a Sport in UK

124 governments world wide recognise chess as a sport. United Kingdom’s outdated distinctions between physical and mental sporting activities had denied chess the same acknowledgement for quite some time. But recent changes signaled in the mainstream media announced a significant change: chess is finally recognised as a sport in UK. 02.12.06 - Intchess Trainers Involved in 2nd National Camp, KL (Malaysia)

Between 27th and 30th November 2006, two Intchess Asia trainers from Singapore and two Intchess (Malaysia) trainers conducted the sessions of the 2nd National Chess Camp in Kuala Lumpur. Organised by the Malaysian Chess Federation, the camp attracted no less than 100 participants (from beginners to National Junior Squad level). Between 4th and 7th December, IM Tibor Karolyi and his Intchess colleagues from KL will conduct another attractive camp in Penang.

02.12.06 - Intchess (M) Sdn Bhd Launches ASEAN Chess Academy in Malaysia

On 26th November 2006, Intchess Sdn Bhd, our branch in Kuala Lumpur, officially launched ASEAN Chess Academy (Malaysia Branch). Managing Director of Intchess Asia, Mr Ignatius Leong, delivered a speech stressing, among many others, the stringent need for superior collaboration between the chess training centres of the region for the benefit of all nations involved. 02.12.06 - May Moves On

On 18th October 2006, Mrs May Hui resigned on her own accord from her position as Marketing Director of Intchess Asia Pte Ltd. She did so as she was to be involved with several tourism and travel related projects and was not able to take up the offer of the company to commit on full time employment as the Marketing Director. The company and staff wish her all the best in her endeavours.

30.11.06 - Chess Debuts at Asian Games, Doha 2006

The 15th Asian Games are held in Doha, Qatar, from 1st – 15th December 2006. Chess is included as a sport at Asian level for the first time on this occasion. The schedule shows three major tournaments: Men’s Rapid, Women’s Rapid and Team’s Classical. The following 19 countries have sent teams: Bahrain, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, India, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Macau, Nepal, Palestinian Territory, the Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Syria, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. FIDE Senior Trainer & IM Jovan Petronic and WIM Sanja Petronic, former Intchess Asia trainers, sent us the following note from Greece: “Dear Mr. Leong and Intchess Asia, Congratulations on the 10th Anniversary. We wish you, your dedicated staffs and trainers many more successful years to come!” Intchess team thanks them for their gesture and assures them their presence is missed by the Singapore chess training community.

15.11.06 - Visit ACA Booth at Asian Children’s Expo 2006!

ASEAN Chess Academy will again be part of the Asian Children’s Expo. This year’s event is held in the Singapore Expo Hall 4B (1 Expo Drive, Singapore 486150). Visit us at Booth B35 from Friday (17th Nov.) to Sunday (19th Nov.) between 11 am and 9 pm for an exciting and fun time! On Saturday (18th Nov.) from 4 — 4.20 pm, you can catch an exhibition chess game by two of our chess masters. The game will be played on the main stage and projected on a screen to expert commentary. 11.11.06 - 7th New Generation Chess Championships 2006

A total of 478 participants from 60 schools and 15 kindergartens will be taking part in this year's New Generation Chess Championships. Please check attached Round 1 pairing lists for the 5 categories.

For participants in the Pearl section, the ratings are based on the latest SCF Rating Schedule dated October 2006.

Please be punctual as Round 1 shall commence at 9.00 am. All participants are required to be present before 8.45 am. Souvenir T-shirts and lunch vouchers shall be distributed on event day.

25.10.06 - Beginners Graduate with Honours in Schools

As 2006 draws to a close, the Intchess Asia team of trainers have concluded the long and systematic process of building the chess foundation for thousands of very young chess players in schools. In the schools where chess has been incorporated into the school curriculum, the results have been remarkable. At Gongshang Primary School, 91% of the pupils achieved a pass rate, at Northland Primary School it was 87%, and at Nanyang Primary School, 92% out of the record number of 1,043 pupils studying the ABCs of chess passed. Congratulations to all!

ASEAN Chess Academy has opened enrolment for a special 6-session course on chess openings. Many different modules are available between 4th November and 30th December 2006. Intchess Asia trainers with wide practical experience and vast theoretical knowledge in chess openings will conduct the course. Asean Chess Academy Pte Ltd has opened its first regional branch, in Malaysia. 20.10.06 - World Youth Chess Championship 2006

The Government of Georgia, Georgian Chess Federation and LTD “Travel Club” are organising the World Youth Chess Championship 2006 (U8, U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18) which will take place in Batumi (Georgia) between 18 October and 29 October. Singapore is represented by Chung Kim Kui (Team Manager), Andrew Chan (Asst Team Manager), GM Wu Shaobin (Coach), IM Tibor Karolyi (Coach), Ravindran Shanmugam (Boys U18), Sarah Chan (Girls U16), Chung Juen Sen (Boys U14) and Daniel Chan (Boys U12). 18.10.06 - The NEXT Move

The Academy will be moving to bigger and better premises to keep pace with the growth of Chess in Singapore and the region. Measuring close to about 8000 sq. feet, the new centre is located at The Plaza along Beach Road. We are expected to be operational at the new premises by end November 2006. Do look out for further updates in due course. Renovation work will start this week. Last week, FIDE Honorary President, Mr Florencio Compomanes toured the new centre and gave it a rousing endorsement. 18.10.06 Sunday, 1st - Children's Day Chess Challenge 2006

180 young children celebrated Children's Day (1st October 2006) by participating in a chess challenge organised by the Singapore Chess Federation and the Cairnhill Community Club Management Committee at the Cairnhill CC Hall. A number of parents and older siblings also took part in an ' Open' category for participants 12 years and above. To promote the importance of Family - category prizes were presented to sibling pairs and parent/child teams. The National Veterans Championships also took place at the same venue. Koh Kum Hong won the title for the first time and took home with him the top prize and the Ignatius Leong Challenge Trophy. Full details of the results: Children's Day & National Veterans.

18.10.06 - SCF October 2006 Rating List

The Singapore Chess Federation FIDE October 2006 Rating lists are out. For full details please click FIDE October 2006 Rating or SCF October 2006 Rating. The forthcoming 7th New Generation Chess Championships to be held on 12 November 2006 at the SAFRA Toa Payoh Multi-Purpose Hall will use the SCF/FIDE (October 2006) rating lists. Participants are cordially invited to submit their entries by 20 October 2006 to enjoy the 'early-bird' discount.

14.10.06 Vladimir Kramnik – New World Chess Champion!

On 13th October 2006 Vladimir Kramnik (Russia) won a dramatic and tense match against Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) in Elista (Republic of Kalmykia). After both players had tied the 12-game match, they played a 4-game rapid decider, which Kramnik took 2.5 — 1.5. With this result, FIDE (World Chess Federation) finally succeeded in reunifying the chess world after many years of having two world champions. 20.09.06 Shanghai Learning Trip with Channel NewsAsia

Students can get a taste of broadcast journalism from the professionals, Channel NewsAsia. Between 3 and 8 December 2006, the broadcaster is organising another learning expedition to China. Besides a visit to Shanghai and its environs, including Suzhou and Hangzhou, the youngsters will be involved in newsgathering and production, attend a lesson in a school, and much more. 20.09.06 Gek Poh Ville CC 10th Anniversary Chess Challenge

As part of its 10th Anniversary festivities, Gek Poh Ville Community Club held a chess challenge organised by ASEAN Chess Academy. The event on 17 September 2006 attracted 128 players, mostly juniors. Dr. Amy Khor, a Member of Parliament for Hong Kah GRC (Hong Kah North Division), graced the event. Chng Jiun Jing Pearle scored a perfect seven to take the 15-min-a-side Swiss.

10.09.06 Lee Bee Wah Cup – Nee Soon South CC Chess Challlenge 2006

On 3 September 2006, Nee Soon South Community Club hosted an open tournament for the Lee Bee Wah Cup. The event was organised by Nee Soon South CC and ASEAN Chess Academy. The seven-round Swiss Rapid drew 208 participants, 65 of whom were under 8 years old! The top prizes were won by Kadam Rohit Ashok (7 pts), Mohamad Ruhul Islam (6.5 pts), Benford Tan (6 pts). 28.08.06 Intchess Manager Aces Prestigious Chess Journalism - Again!

For the second time in as many years, one of Intchess Asia's Managers Olimpiu G. Urcan, a FIDE Trainer & NM, has won the prestigious Chess Journalists of America/Fred Cramer Awards Committee for Excellence in Chess Journalism/Best Historical Article Award 2006, ahead of several outstanding American chess historians to the honour.

28.08.06 Intchess Asia Trainer Publishes Chess Book on G. Kasparov

Kasparov's Fighting Chess, 1993-1998 & 1999 - 2005 (2 Volumes) By renowned Intchess Asia Trainer Tibor Karolyi and Dr Nick Aplin is one of the latest additions to the literature on the chess genius of former world champion Garry Kasparov. The two volumes promise fresh analysis to Kasparov's games from 1993 - 2005 and are well received by the critics. Congratulations to Tibor and Dr. Aplin for this first-rate contribution in the field. With their kind consent, excerpts from the book are published in Intchess Issue 10 / May - June 2006. Do not miss it!

28.08.06 National Day Chess Challenge: Young Beginners

On 11 August 2006, ASEAN Chess Academy organised the National Day Chess Challenge for young beginners. No fewer than 40 very young (5- to 7-year-old) chess trainees registered. Under the joyful eyes of their parents, they moved their King's Pawn at the start of what was for many of them their first chess tournament. After five hotly disputed rounds, the top prizewinners were: 1. Lim Bryan - 4.5 pts, 2. Chew Wi Loon - 4.5 pts, 3. Liu Song Tian - 4 pts. Congratulations to all these very young and promising chess players!

21.08.06 Chess & Art Evening - A Success

The Chess & Art Evening organised by Club Intchess on 22nd July attracted the participation of the most active junior members of the Club. Besides competing in solving some artistic puzzles and playing friendly games, they also had to produce a quality drawing with a chess theme of their choice. The highest scorers received prizes in chess books, notebooks and other chess souvenirs given away by Club Intchess organisers.

29.06.06 Coaching Seminar for Trainers in Macau

On 24th - 25th June 2006 ASEAN Chess Academy conducted a short, yet intensive, seminar for chess trainers in Macau at the invitation of Macau Chess Association. In 12 hours of instruction, the participants learnt about and exchanged experiences on the general principles of early chess training, chess in schools and the axioms of a successful private training system for younger players.

27.06.06 7th ASEAN Age-Group Championships

In the just-concluded 7th ASEAN Age-Group Championships the Singapore delegation obtained 33 medals, down from the 59 in the previous outing in Thailand . Nevertheless, several young stars made their mark. Mohammad Haikal finished clear first in the Boys Under-10 section whilst Teo Wei Xing tied for second in the Boys Under-16.

12.06.06 First Saturday Chess Tournaments

The First Saturday series of tournaments are organized regularly in Budapest , Hungary , beginning on the first Saturday of each calendar month. These tournaments give aspiring players opportunities to achieve FIDE ratings and also FM, IM, and GM titles. Since 1992, many famous chess players have achieved grandmaster performances (norms) at these tournaments, amongst them one of our trainers, Viktor Varavin .

12.06.06 7th ASEAN Age-Group Championships start

The 7th ASEAN Age-Group Championships starts today till 20 June in Jakarta , Indonesia . The Championships comprise three events: standard, rapid, and blitz. Last year, our young lions brought back the second largest number of medals among the eight participating countries. Intchess Asia and the ASEAN Chess Academy wish all participating success!

23.05.06 36th Chess Olympiad starts

The 36th edition of the Chess Olympiad has opened in Turin, Italy. There are a total of 146 teams in the open division, from traditional heavyweights such as Russia to emerging countries in chess such as Afghanistan. Each team comprises a captain and 6 players, of which four can play in any given match.
Singapore is represented by GM Wong Meng Kong, IM Jason Goh, IM Chan Peng Kong, FM Goh Wei Ming, FM Dominic Lo and Jeslin Tay. The team captain is GM Wu Shaobin.

14.05.06 Ignatius Leong's Open Letter on FIDE Elections

The FIDE elections will be held during the FIDE Congress in Turin, Italy . The two Presidential candidates are the incumbent Kirsan Ilyumzhinov , who is a Head of State, and Dutch professional corporate leader Bessel Kok . The campaigning has been intense with Ilyumzhinov claiming the support of 70 national chess federations and Kok 37 at time of writing.

Sensing that the contest is potentially divisive for the chess world, our managing director and current General Secretary of FIDE, Mr Ignatius Leong , makes a radical call for unity and a reconstitution of the Election Ticket. Click here for details.

10.05.06 CHESS at SJIOB SPORTS FIESTA

The SJI Old Boys' Association is organising their 3rd Annual Sports Fiesta on 20 May 2006 . Chess is one of the sports contested. They would like to invite all students of the ASEAN Chess Academy and their families to sign up as well. There will be a mini-food fair. All proceeds from the event shall be donated to charity. 02.05.06 A Bright Triumph at World Level for Intchess

Derek Lim becomes Singapore's 1st World Champion by winning the Open Under-7 category with 8/8 at World Schools Championship at Halkidiki ( Greece ), 24 April - 2 May 2006 . Danielle Ho tied for 1-3 positions but came in 3rd after tie break in Open Under-11. In the team category, our "Roaring Lions", involving Derek Lim, Linson Lim, Danielle Ho, Michelle Ho and Aston Taminsyah - representing Asean Chess Academy - won the Gold Medal finishing ahead of Russia and England respectively in a field of 27 teams. Congratulations to all!

29.04.06 2nd Club Intchess Open

The 2nd Club Intchess Open was held at St. Joseph 's Institution on the 22 nd of April. It proved to be a tremendously successful event, attracting 117 participants. Tan Weiliang won with 6.5 points after 7 gruelling rounds of rapid chess.

28.04.06 Our Trainee DEREK LIM Starring at World Schools

At the end of the 4th round of the World Schools Championships held in Halkidiki ( Greece ) as part of the Games Festival, Derek Lim, one of very gifted Intchess Trainees, is in joint lead for U-7 Category with an astounding score of 4/4. Derek has remarked himself in the local competitions by his ability to win game after game leaving behind his contenders. Linson Lim, his brother, also performs well thus far, scoring 3/ 4 in U-9. 07.03.06 Singapore Police Force learning with Intchess!

On 28th February 2006, a Basics of Chess workshop was conducted at ASEAN Chess Academy for 28 employees of the Singapore Police Force (SPF). The workshop comprised two lectures over seven hours. Chess theory was imparted through worksheets, interactive practice and assessments. Most of the participants found the workshop useful in introducing them to the basics of the Royal Game. In agreeing to the workshop, the SPF saw value in the game of chess as a worthy pastime for its staff during their working years and after.

27.02.06 Trainees sweep titles

What a splendid 10 th anniversary present for Intchess Asia - every single category at the National Schools Individual Championships was won by our trainees . In the categories with playoffs, all of those who tied for first placing were also our trainees.

To add icing to the cake, over a hundred have qualified for the National Junior Squad. Congratulations to all those who have taken part and competed successfully! Click here for the full results.

22.02.06 National Schools Individual Championships

This year's National Schools Individual Chess Championships will be held in Hougang Sports Hall . It is the 58 th time the event is being held. Every year, over 1000 participants from kindergarten to junior colleges and polytechnics take part. This year will be no exception.

Do make it a point to come down this Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am to 5:30pm to Singapore 's top students, including many of our trainees, vie for national titles. Last year, they swept many titles: L y Hong Nguyen won the U20 category; Pham Chuong won the U16 category; Howard Chiu won the U14 category; Dominic Lo won the U12 category; Graham Chua won the U10 category; Linson Lim won the U8 category.

19.02.06 Goh Weiming - 58th National Champion

After 10 rounds of grueling four-hour matches, twenty-two year old Goh Weiming emerges as the winner of the 2006 National Men's Championships. This is in the latest of a string of impressive performances, his individual bronze and International Master norm at the SEA games being the most recent. Goh is a columnist of Intchess Magazine.

Many other trainees performed credibly. Jason Goh finished runners up; Evan Yeo finished 4th , Dominic Lo tied for 5th and Daryl Wong for 7th .

Jeslin Tay won the Women's Championships one full point ahead of Liu Yang and Suzanna Sia . Our trainees also dominated the event.

11.02.06 Ravindran Shanmugam shines in New Zealand

The Queenstown Chess Classic was held in Queenstown , New Zealand from the 15 th to the 24 th of January . One of our trainees, 16 year old Ravindran Shanmugam of the Singapore-American School took part. He performed credibly in the strong field of Grandmasters, International Masters, and FIDE Masters to finish in 64 th position. The tournament results and a pictorial report are linked.

This is not Ravindran's first notable performance on the international stage however - he had swept aside all opposition in an FM Tournament organized by First Saturday in Budapest , Hungary to finish a clear first well ahead of the pack.

His trainer from Intchess , IM Tibor Karolyi noted that Ravindran has been constantly improving. Mr Karolyi also took part in the tournament, finishing an impressive 16 th .

We would like to wish Ravindran all the best in his future endeavours, both in school and on the chessboard.

21.01.06 'SICC - A True International Chess Convention'

The originator of the MonRoi electronic scoresheet technology, Brana Malobabic-Giancristofaro (pictured giving away prizes) , has written about her experiences implementing the technology in different countries in ChessBase .

17.01.06 Excellent Performance at National Age-Groups

After 8 gruelling rounds of matches lasting up to four hours each, our trainees emerge to sweep many titles in the National Age-Group. The most notable is Teo Wei Xing , a Secondary 3 student from Raffles Institution who won the Open Under-20 Section. Congratulations to Wei Xing and all other trainees who have successfully competed.

The closing ceremony of the event was attended by many distinguished guests, among them Grandmaster Zurab Azmaiparashvilli .

10.01.06 Trainees set to win National titles

The National Age-Group Championships started on January 7 in Northland Primary School . Approximately 300 youth from the age of 6 to 19 are contesting for top honours across 10 sections. The Chief Arbiter of the event is Leung Weiwen.

The event will be continuing on the 14th and 15th of January from 9.30am to 6.30pm on both days. Why not come down and have a look at how many of Singapore 's top juniors play? Watch out in particular for our trainees such as Teo Wei Xing (Open Under-20), Terry Chua and Howard Chiu (Open Under-16), Dominic Lo (Boys Under-14), among others, who are performing excellently and are key contenders for National titles.

10.01.06 "We Need Training" - Malaysia

On January 6, 2006 , The Star of Malaysia published an article by Quah Seng Sun. Quah , a Malaysian veteran, lamented the lack of a proper structured training programme in Malaysia, which was in stark contrast in Singapore . He added that it was because of this that Singapore easily won the Singapore-Malaysia Challenge every year.

The ASEAN Chess Academy, being FIDE's only accredited academy in Asia, is proud to have spearheaded Singapore's rise in chess, and will continue to improve upon our training programme and trainer's skills to make Singapore one of the top chess playing nations in Asia, and even the world.

05.01.06 Intchess & Gongshang Pri develop young minds

Chess was recently introduced in Gongshang Primary. The school and Intchess worked together to make the sport part of the curriculum for all Primary One students, with remarkable results. Parents were happy to note that their children were not only more academically inclined, especially towards Mathematics, but also more self-disciplined.

The ASEAN Chess Academy has struck a deal with Chess Assistant to become its distributor in Southeast Asia. Chess Assistant is a popular software that is also a powerful training tool. By accessing its large database of games, one can see and learn from both the brilliancies of masters and the mistakes of amateurs.

30.12.06 Coaches undergo FIDE accredited seminars

As part of the Singapore International Chess Convention, we sent our trainers for seminars recognized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE), namely the Arbiter's Course and the Trainer's Seminar . In the former, Asya Son and Angela Khegay both passed the test. In the latter, Alexsey Ariskin achieved the title of FIDE Instructor, whilst Natalia Edzgveradze , Eric Gloria, Tigran Gyozalayan, Chitrada Krishna, Kiril Kuznetsov, Luong Truong Minh, Nguyen Tan Tung, Elidoro Polistico, and Olimpiu Urcan were all awarded the title of FIDE Trainer. The former was conducted by IA Panagiotis Nikolopoulos , Chairman of the FIDE Arbiters Committee, while the Trainer's Seminar was conducted by GM Yuri Razuvaev , Chairman of the FIDE Trainer's Committee and GM Zurab Azmaiparazhvili , a FIDE Vice-President who is also among the world's top 50 players.

30.12.05 Ni Hua wins Singapore Masters

For a while it seemed that Grandmaster Zurab Azmaiparashvili from Georgia would win, being the clear favourite according to ratings. However, a last round win by Ni Hua from China allowed him to clinch the top prize.

The Challengers section was won again by an Indonesian - Boy T - but on tiebreak this time round. Both the Masters and the Challengers were held at Hotel Royal from December 26 to 30.

28.12.05 Stellar performance at the Asian Schools

Singapore's young lions brought back 15 golds in the recently concluded Asian Schools Championships. The event, held for the first time, was hosted in Hotel Royal at Newton Road . Channel NewsAsia reported that although SCF officials noted that other countries did not send their strongest competitors, they were nevertheless pleased with the result.

28.12.05 Singapore Masters starts

The 2nd Singapore Masters Open and Challengers Tournament is underway at Hotel Royal in Newton Road . Over 100 players, from Grandmaster Zurab Azmaiparashvili of Georgia to 6-year-old Derek Lim, are fighting grueling matches until the 30 th . The Chief Arbiter of both events is Thomas Hoe.

22.11.05 6th New Generation Tournament

With 417 children packing the hall of Pei Chun Public School, the ten categories of the 6th New Generation were very closely contested. Rising star Moses Soh brought back the Challenge Trophy for the Diamond Section.
