24.06.08 - 9th Asean Age Group Chess Championships 2008
Danang, Vietnam 9th – 18 June 2008

Team Singapore with 26 players arrived in Danang, Vietnam, on 9th June 2008 for the 9th Asean Age Group Championships 2008.

Although missing some top junior players in the annual event, the team emerged overall in third position behind powerhouses Vietnam and the Philippines.

The Asean Chess Academy congratulates all medal winners both in the individual categories and team events. Others who did not win any medals also enjoyed the experience and comradeship.

12.05.08 - Successful Chess Awareness Programme at Kheng Cheng School

Between 5 and 9 May 2008, a Chess Awareness Programme was conducted by ASEAN Chess Academy trainers at Kheng Cheng School. Over the five days, more than 180 Primary One & Two pupils were taught the basics of the game, played casual games, watched instructive chess videos and succeeded in acquiring the basic knowledge of chess for beginners. Chess at Kheng Cheng School is popular at Club level but also as Co-Curricular Activity (CCA). At the end of May, two special chess camps will be conducted at the school. 07.05.08 - India Gets 19 FIDE Licensed Chess Trainers

India got four FIDE Trainer titles at the end of the FIDE Trainer Seminar organised by the All India Chess Federation at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from April 30-May 7.

Among the 19 chess trainers who came from all over India, four got the FIDE Trainer title, seven obtained the FIDE Instructor title, three received the National Instructor title and five took the Development Instructor title. The course was conducted by FIDE Senior Trainer and International Master Jovan Petronic of Belgrade, Serbia, and Peter Long of Malaysia in a very professional manner.

24.03.08 - FM Graham Chua wins Intchess Mixed Tournament 2008

ASEAN Chess Academy hosted Intchess Mixed Tournament, part of the ASEAN Masters Circuit, from 15 to 23 March 2008. Twelve players from six countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam) took part. The 11-round tournament was won by FM Graham Xing-Jian Chua (Singapore) with 9 points, followed by FM Peter Long (Malaysia) with 8 points and FM Kyaw Lin Naing (Myanmar) with 7½ points. CM Daniel Chan (Singapore) was fourth after the 3rd-4th position tiebreak. Congratulations to all (including Intchess trainers who assisted in preparation)! Full results here.

15.03.08 - We are moving…………

03.03.08 - 1st Family Chess Festival – Northland Primary School

On Saturday, 1 March 2008, ASEAN Chess Academy supported the initiative of Northland Primary School to organise the 1st Family Chess Festival to promote family bonding through chess. More than 120 participants (pupils, parents, grandparents) attended the workshop, staged in the school’s Gymnasium Hall. The Intchess FIDE Trainer conducted an intensive workshop for beginners (7.45am to 1.00pm) guiding pupils and parents alike in learning the basics of the game. 28.02.08 - 9th ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships 2008

ASEAN Chess Confederation has announced that the 9th ASEAN Age-Group Chess Championships will be held in Danang (Vietnam), 11-20 June 2008. It will be conducted on the following categories: U8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 for Girls and Open and Seniors Category (aged 50 and above). 20.01.08 - Singapore players top the 1st ASEAN Masters Circuit (Tarakan, Indonesia)

The Singapore delegation of Trainees & Trainers who took part in the 1st Leg of the 1st ASEAN Masters Circuit held in Tarakan, Indonesia, from 8th to 19th January return with major achievements. In the GM "A" Group, Singapore's new PR GM Zhang Zhong won convincingly with the final score of 9 points from 11 rounds. In the GM "B" Group, FT & IM Ashot Nadanian (who has also applied for SPR) was placed second, narrowly missing his third GM norm. In the WIM Tournament, FM Graham Chua was 3rd - he drew against GM Edhi Handoko, who has long been one of Indonesia's strongest players. Tying for 5th were WFM Jeslin Tay and WFM Nguyen Thi Mai Hung (who is doing a one-year training stint in Singapore). WFM Victoria Chan tied for 10th place. All the six players gained rating points; hauling a combined total of 105 points. Results can be downloaded here.

29.12.07 - GM Azmaiparashvili wins Singapore Masters 2007

Singapore Masters Open 2007 was held at ASEAN Chess Academy, 16–22 December 2007. Forty-four players (8GMs, 4WGMs, 9IMs among others) started the 9-round Swiss competition. GM Zurab Azmaiparashvili (Georgia) won the top prize with 7 pts. GM Zhang Zhong (Singapore) tied for first but lost the tiebreak. GM Sandipan Chanda (India) finished third with 6½ pts, followed on the fourth position by IM Julio Catalino Sadorra with 6 pts. The Challengers Open Tournament, held concurrently, was won by Ong Way Justin (Malaysia) with 8 pts.

14.12.07 - 1st Masterskill ASEAN Youth Team Chess Championships – A Success

Held in Kuala Lumpur on 1–7 December 2007, 1st Masterskill ASEAN Youth Team Championships drew 72 school teams from Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam (U9, U12 & U15). It was organised by the ASEAN Chess Confederation (ACC) and the Malaysian MOE and managed by Intchess Asia Sdn. Bhd. Nanyang Primary School, Northland Primary School and ACA sent representative teams. At the end of an exciting team struggle all Singapore teams obtained commendable results and grabbed the opportunity for gaining experience and fostering the much needed team spirit. A Seminar for Chess Trainers (Developmental Instructor/National Instructor Levels) was also part of the event. Twelve trainers from various Malaysian states attended the lectures given by experienced ACA FIDE Trainers. Following the examination process training titles were awarded. Special guests were Mr. Ignatius Leong, Chairman of ACC, Dato’ Sri Hishammudin Bin Tun Hussein, Malaysian Minster of Education, and Perak Princess Raja Datuk Seri Azureen Sultan Azlan Shah. The event confirmed the excellent potential for chess development in schools in Malaysia. Details and results can be obtained from the official website.

14.12.07 - GM Razuvaev on Chess, Education & Intelligence

Grandmaster Jury Razuvaev, celebrated Russian trainer and Chairman of FIDE Trainers Committee, was recently interviewed on ChessOK.com. GM Razuvaev had conducted a seminar for trainers in Singapore in 2005. He thus had the opportunity to scrutinise the developments of chess in schools in Singapore and the region then. In his interview, GM Razuvaev said of Singapore: “I was surprised at the range of chess education in this country.” Read the whole insightful interview here.

01.12.07 - World Youth Chess Championships 2007 – Final Results

World Youth Chess Championships were held in Antalya (Turkey) between 17 and 29 November 2007. Eighteen Singapore players participated in this important 11-round event. The best results for Singaporeans were: CM Daniel Yi-Ren Chan (9th at U14 with 8 pts), FM Graham Chua (12th at U12 with 7.5 pts), WFM Monisha Raja Jawahar (13th at Girls U10 with 7 pts), Derek Lim (14th at U8 with 7.5 pts), WFM Danielle Ho (20th at Girls U12 with 7 pts), FM Daniel Fernandez (22nd at U12 with 7 pts). 01.12.07 - Vung Tau to host World Youth Chess Championships 2008

Mr. Ignatius Leong, Chairman of the ASEAN Chess Confederation, announced that Vung Tau (Vietnam) will host the World Youth Chess Championships, 19-31 October 2008. This will be for the very first time when this prestigious event will be held in one of the ASEAN countries. Vung Tau is the capital of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province and is the petroleum centre of the country. The city’s rich history dates back to the 14th century and is an attractive resort favoured by tourists. Details of the city and its province may be obtained here. 07.11.07 - Forthcoming 4th SICC featured on World Chess News

World Chess News, the weekly chess news television programme produced by Krzymowski Chess TV, recently published its episode #171. The news section opened with an interesting report on the forthcoming 4th Singapore International Chess Convention to be held in Singapore on 16-22 December 2007. 07.11.07 - Intchess Magazine Issue 17 is released

Intchess Magazine issue 17 – July/August 2007 has been released. It is a 70-page special issue dedicated to the World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad held in Singapore, 5-13 August 2007. The issue contains a large part of the most exciting games played, but also reports, speeches and photographs of the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov’s visit in Singapore during the same period. 26.10.07 - Masterskill Asean+ Youth Team Chess Championships 2007

Intchess Asia, Asean Chess Academy and Club Intchess will be sending teams to the Masterskill Asean+ Youth Team Chess Championships 2007. The event will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 1 December to 7 December 2007. Trainees who are Under-9, Under-12 or Under-15 are cordially invited. The above organizations will be sending 3 teams each.

24.10.07 - Chess at 2nd Asian Indoor Games

Between 26 October and 3 November 2007, the 2nd Asian Indoor Games take place in Macau. Chess is one of 19 sports featured. Singapore is among the 24 Asian countries in the chess competition (classic, rapid and blitz). There are mixed team competitions and individual (men and women) competitions with 9 gold medals at stake. Asian Chess Federation has appointed Mr Ignatius Leong as Technical Delegate. 25.09.07 - New ASEAN Chess Tournaments

ASEAN Chess Confederation’s federation leaders (representatives of the National Chess Federations of Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam) met at Cebu (Philippines) on 23 September 2007 and signed the regulations for two new major chess events: the First edition of ASEAN Masters Circuit 2008 and the First edition of ASEAN Grand Prix 2007-2008. 25.09.07 - Chess in Singapore Book of Records 2007!

The largest chess tournament ever held in Singapore is featured in the latest edition of Singapore Book of Records 2007. The just released 2nd edition of the record book notes that more than 1,200 players took part in the 56th National Inter-Schools Individual Championships, jointly organised by Singapore Chess Federation and ASEAN Chess Academy in 2004. The book contains many record-breaking feats from various aspects of life. Dip into it to discover interesting snippets like who shot the last wild tiger on the island, and who defeated his adversary at judo in 8 seconds flat!

13.09.07 - ACA Under 12 Chess Challenge 2007

Registration is open for ACA Under 12 Chess Challenge 2007 to be held on 23 September. The event, organised by Intchess Asia, is open to under 12-year-old players. The 7-round Swiss tournament with rapid chess time control will be held on the premises of Asean Chess Academy. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to 7 different categories. 13.09.07 - ASEAN + Youth Team Championships 2007

ASEAN Chess Confederation and Malaysian Ministry of Education announces ASEAN & Youth Team Championships to be held in Kuala Lumpur, 1 – 7 December 2007. Asean Chess Academy is endorsing the event as a first-rate opportunity for competitive play at regional level. We encourage all interested parties to participate. 12.09.07 - ACA’s Chess Programs for Schools - A Success

On 6-7 September 2007, the 48th National Inter School Team Championships were held at Nan Hua Primary School. 70 schools sent their strongest chess teams to compete in the event. The final standings reveal very good news for ASEAN Chess Academy’s training programs in schools. Both at primary and secondary categories, the top medal winners are school teams trained by Intchess based on a systematic syllabus, a complex coordinating effort and a fruitful partnership with schools’ CCA officials. 12.09.07 - September Holiday Chess Camps Concluded

The three holiday chess camps organised by ASEAN Chess Academy on 3-5 September 2007 concluded successfully. More than 30 trainees benefited from the three days of intensive chess instruction offered by various Intchess trainers. In addition to the specific training (strategy, tactics and openings learning sessions), the trainees fully engaged in training games, friendly and fun skittles, but also in serious tournaments with prizes. Top winners were awarded with special chess camp medals. All participants received certificates and small souvenirs from the organizers.

21.08.07 - New Holiday Chess Camps (3-5 September)

ASEAN Chess Academy will organise three chess camps from 3-5 September 2007 for intermediate, developmental and advanced students. The three days of in-depth chess instruction and practice sessions are planned to be conducted by Intchess trainers at ACA. Registrations are open to those interested. 21.08.07 - Raffles Institution tops National Division in Inter-Clubs 2007

From 17-19 August 2007, the National Inter-Clubs Team Championships 2007 were held at Singapore Chess Federation. An exciting struggle unfolded in the National Division, which was contested by six teams. After 5 rounds, Raffles Institution won the Inter-Clubs Trophy with 13 pts, followed closely by Combined Schools with 12.5 pts. The bronze went to SCF Olympians while the 4th place went on adjudication to Club Intchess. The younger players dominated the event and Raffles Institution, trained by our trainers, fully deserve to be commended for their performance. Detailed results may be found here.

21.08.07 - 2nd National Day Young Beginners 2007

On August 17 2007, the 2nd National Day Young Beginners Chess Tournament was organised by ASEAN Chess Academy on its premises. Fifty-four young chess players (below 7 years old) entered the competition. After 6 rounds, Cheng Jun Yuan Ryan emerged victorious with 5.5 pts. He was followed by 5 players each with 5 pts: Kris Watson, Lau Ende Matthew, Lee Qing Aun, Wang Chang Kai Kenneth, Sneha Peter. Congratulations to all. Here are the final standings.

13.08.07 - FIDE President Joins In Singapore’s National Day Celebrations

Immediately after the Closing Ceremony of the World Youth Under-16 Olympiad 2007 at the ASEAN Chess Academy, FIDE President and Head of the Republic of Kalmykia, Mr Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited Sentosa, Singapore’s popular island resort and the venue of the IR (Integrated Resort – Casino) under development.

That evening, at the invitation of the Singapore Chess federation, whose premises are in Bishan East Constituency, he joined 2,000 Bishan East constituents in their 42nd National Day Celebrations Dinner.

The FIDE President personally congratulated Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Mr Wong Kan Seng on the country’s successes. Mr. Wong is the Member of Parliament for Bishan Toa-Payoh GRC – Bishan East Division.

13.08.07 - FIDE President visits ASEAN Chess Academy

Mr Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, FIDE President and Head of the Republic of Kalmykia, was Special Guest at the closing ceremony of the World Youth U16 Olympiad held in Singapore from 4-12 August 2007. Mr Ilyumzhinov arrived on August 10 and toured the FIDE Singapore Office, the Global Chess Academy and the ASEAN Chess Academy and the playing site of the Youth Olympiad accompanied by FIDE General Secretary and President of Singapore Chess Federation Ignatius Leong. Mr. Ilyumzhinov also met with Singapore government representatives, local and regional chess officials and the Olympiad’s officials. Before the closing ceremony, Mr. Ilyumzhinov had a meeting with Mr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports of Singapore, who was Guest-of-Honour at the ceremony. In his speech at the closing ceremony, the FIDE President acknowledged the quality efforts of the Singapore chess bodies in making chess popular in the region. In all, 35 teams from 25 countries are participating: Australia, Chinese Taipei, England, Hungary, Hong Kong, Iceland, Indonesia, Iran, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Macau, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, USA, UAE, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Zambia. This year’s edition has set a record in the number of participating teams since the inaugural event in 1993. The event is organised by FIDE and SCF. Among the 156 young players this time are 5 IMs, 12 FMs, 2 WFMs and 3 CMs. Here is the list of teams.

31.07.07 - 19th National Rapid Championships 2007

On 28 and 29 July 2007, the 19th National Rapid Championships, organised by SCF, were held at ASEAN Chess Academy. A total of 255 players took part in the Men’s, Women’s and Challengers’ sections. An exciting struggle in the Men’s saw CM Daniel Chan, FM Dominic Lo and IM Chan Peng Kong tied with 7 pts after 9 rounds, followed by Timothy Chan, Terry Chua and Tan Wei Liang with 6.5 pts. The tie for first place was resolved by a play off won by IM Chan, followed by CM Chan and FM Lo. In the Women’s, WFM Liu Yang took the top prize with 7.5 pts, followed by WFM Jeslin Tay with 7 pts and Victoria Chan with 6 pts. In the Challengers’, Derek Lim was first with 8 pts, ahead of Pearle Chng Jiun Jing (8 pts) and Linson Lim (7.5 pts). Here are the final results. Congratulations to all!

17.07.07 - Singaporeans Top Asia Dragons
Invitation Chess Tournament 2007!

The Asia Dragons Invitation Chess Tournament 2007 in Kaohsiung (Chinese Taipei) ended 16 July 2007 with the four Singapore players achieving outstanding results. The U16 event was won by Timothy Chan with the score of 10.5 pts out of 11, and Victoria Chan finishing third with 8 pts. Lee Kiyul (Korea) was second with 8.5 pts. In the Open Tournament, the two Singaporeans, CM Daniel Chan (Singapore) and FM Terry Chua took the top two spots with 9.5 pts and 9 pts respectively. The 11-round event attracted 24 players from five territories (Taipei, Macau, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Korea) and had started on 8 July 2007. The Chief Arbiter was Mr. Ignatius Leong from Singapore. Congratulations to Singapore’s young players!

17.07.07 - Turkey Hosts the World Youth Chess Championships 2007

The Turkish Chess Federation (TCF) is organising the World Youth Chess Championships (U8 to U16 – boys and girls) from 17 to 29 November 2007, One of the most active chess federations in the world, the TCF has the ambition to organise an event with about. 5000 guests. The event will be held in Turkey’s most beautiful province, Antalya. The Singapore players who qualify may send their entries to Singapore Chess Federation before 15 August 2007. 13.07.07 - Nee Soon East Community Club Chess Challenge

Intchess Asia WGM Natalia Ed had the honour of playing a Singapore Minister in a chess encounter. The match was the prelude to the 1st Nee Soon East Community Club Chess Challenge 2007 for the Ho Peng Kee Chess Challenge Trophy held on Sunday 8 July 2007. The event took place at the Nee Soon East Community Club.

Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, the Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs and also Member of Parliament for Nee Soon East Constituency, was the special guest of honour and he officiated the opening of the event.

A total of 196 participants signed up for the event won by Kelvin Wee with a perfect score of 7 points from 7 rounds. He will keep the crystal trophy sponsored by Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee for the next 6 months.

Professor Ho mingled with the crowd and participants and was pleased with the keen support. He request that the CC Women Executive Committee organise this event annually.

01.07.07 - Intchess Master at Nanyang Primary Fun Fair

On 30 June 2007, Nanyang Primary School organised an Open House & Fun Fair. Among the many attractions of the fair, attended by hundreds, was a well-organised chess corner. Our trainer, IM Luis Chiong, was invited to give a most entertaining simultaneous exhibition against all comers. Those who fared well against the master received chess books, magazines, handy chess sets or insignias as prizes.

23.06.07 - “It was absolute fun” – Holiday Chess Camps End

From 20-22 June, three more chess camps were held at the Academy. A large group of trainees went through an intensive instruction & practice programme for three days (7 hrs per day). All participants profited from the varied sessions conducted by seven trainers, received instructional materials, diplomas and joined thrilling small tournaments with prizes. The top winners took away portable chess sets and issues of intchess magazine. A lucky draw was also done for the rest. Here is a pictorial that also contains impressions of the participants.

19.06.07 - FIDE Congratulates Ignatius Leong on his Wedding

Mr Ignatius Leong’s official wedding banquet took place on 9 June at Waterfront Copthrone Hotel (Singapore). Hundreds of guests, including many famous local and foreign chess players, attended. FIDE published a congratulatory note to honour the new couple. It can be found here. It includes some photographs taken during the event. Intchess congratulates again the Leong family!

19.06.07 - Goh Weiming – International Master!

FM Goh Weiming was Nanyang Technological University’s Sportsman of the Year (2006), National Champion, Intchess columnist and took pride in having one IM norm. Recently, good news reached us from Hungary. Weiming played in two tournaments trying to make his needed IM norms. He made his 2nd norm during Caissa IM Tournament in Kecskemet (21-29 May) and tied for 2nd-3rd. Then he went on to win the First Saturday IM-B Tournament (2-14 June) with 8 out of 11 making his 3rd IM norm. Weiming profited from SCF’s sponsorship programme. Our congratulations to Singapore’s newest International Master!

On 6-8 June a chess camp for elementary/intermediate students was held at ASEAN Chess Academy. 06.06.07 - Mr Ignatius Leong Finally Ties the Knot

On 12th May 2007 Mr Ignatius Leong got married. The wedding ceremony took place in Vung Tàu (Vietnam). Mr Leong’s spouse is Vietnamese and thus a Vietnamese traditional ceremony was in order. On 9th June 2007 a much bigger wedding celebration will take place in Singapore. A number of leading chess people are on the invitation list, including FIDE President Mr Kirsan Illyumzhinov and the Chairman of Global Chess BV, Mr Bessel Kok. The Intchess team wishes a happy, prosperous and long life to the Leong family!

06.06.07 - National Blitz Championships 2007

On 2nd June, the National Blitz Championship was played at the Singapore Chess Federation. IM Jason Goh won the tournament with 10 pts out of 11 ahead of other strong IMs in the 48-player field. The National Junior Blitz Championship was held the next day and drew 122 young players. A good number of our trainees took the top positions in the final standings: Daniel Chan won the Open (9.5/11), Eugene Wee won the U12 category (10.5/11), Aloysius Chia won at U10 (9.5/11), and Derek Lim won the U8 (10.5/11). Well done!

05.06.07 - Important Announcement

Herewith we inform our trainees that on Saturday, 9 June, the Academy will be closed. No courses will be conducted on our premises in The Plaza. The classes will resume on Sunday, 10 June.

29.05.07 - Nee Soon East Community Club Chess Challenge

The Nee Soon East Community Club will be organising their first Chess Challenge on 8 July 2007 at their Community Club Hall from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm. The Club invite all Chess players (young and old) to compete for the coveted Ho Peng Kee Chess Challenge Cup.

26.05.07 - Ignatius Leong – Chief Arbiter at 1st World Women’s Team Chess Championship

The first World Women’s Team Chess Championship is on till 30 May 2007 at Yekaterinburg (Russia). Ten national teams compete: Armenia, Botswana, China, Georgia, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, and Vietnam. Mr. Ignatius Leong is the Chief Arbiter of the prestigious competition, which started on 19 and May. Live games and results can be accessed through the event’s official website.

03.05.07 - Chess for Teachers Workshop

A Chess for Teachers workshop was held at Kheng Cheng School on 25th April and 2nd May 2007. The workshop helped to explain basic concepts of chess at beginners to elementary level. In all, more than 60 teachers attended the two sessions. An ASEAN Chess Academy lecturer conducting the workshop also analysed some games. The Kheng Cheng teachers welcomed the opportunity to learn more about chess as they were expecting the game to become a choice activity among many of their school’s pupils. 03.05.07 - Singapore Chess Heritage Tournament

The Singapore Chess Heritage Tournament organised by the ASEAN Chess Academy, Singapore Heritage Society and National Library Board on 28th April 2007 to mark the launch of a Singapore chess history book drew 65 participants to the POD room at the National Library’s 16th level. After six exciting rounds of rapid chess, the winners were: 1st Philip Goh (5.5 pts) 2nd Sim Poh En Shawn (5 pts) and 3rd Tan Kwang Yang Aaron (5 pts).

19.04.07 - Singapore U8s Trump KL Peers

The Singapore – KL Super 8 Chess Challenge 2007 proved a resounding success. The 29 Under-8 youngsters from Singapore beat their counterparts from Kuala Lumpur 96-20 over 4 rounds.

The event was organised by MSSKL, or Malaysian Schools Sports KL, which is like the Singapore Schools Sports Council. Managed by Club Intchess of KL the event was held at KLCC where the famous and biggest Computer Trade Fair was being staged over eight exhibition halls. The exhibition organisers PIKOM generously gave space equal to 10 booths free of charge. The PIKOM chairman opened the chess event while a director from MSSM came to close it.

Derek Lim, Singapore’s World Schools Under-7 Champion, played two simultaneous matches against the local kids. He won 19 - 1 in the first, and after about 1.5 hours rest, he took the second 17 – 0.

An online match was also held between the two cities. The match was to have been over six boards of two games between the U12, U15 & U18 boys’ and girls’ champions but two KL champions failed to show up and there were no reserves. Singapore managed to squeeze out a 4.5 - 3.5 victory.

10.04.07 - Singapore Chess Heritage Tournament 2007

Intchess Asia, in cooperation with Singapore Heritage Society and National Library Board, announces an attractive chess tournament to be held on 28 April 2007 at National Library on Victoria Street. Singapore Chess Heritage Tournament 2007 links chess and heritage with the launch of an interesting book on Singapore chess history on the same day.

02.04.07 - Singapore - KL Super 8 Chess Challenge 2007

In response to popular requests, the organisers have agreed to invite players who are 8 years of age (1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001) and below as of 1 January 2007 to this special match.

The event shall now be known as Singapore - KL Super 8 Chess Challenge 2007. It will be contested over 80 boards.

22.03.07 - Singapore-KL Under-8 Chess Challenge 2007 (80 Boards)

We are pleased to invite all participants who scored 4.5 points and more in the recently concluded 59th National Schools Individual Chess Championships at the Jurong East Sports Hall to join the team for the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur Under-8 Chess Challenge.

Participants must be under 8 years of age as on 1st January 2007 (1999, 2000 & 2001). The event will take place in KLCC-Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 13 – 15 April 2007 and is held in conjunction with PIKOM 2007 (Malaysia PC Fair).

Due to space constraint, the event will now be reduced to 80 boards instead of 150 as announced earlier. Places shall be offered on a ‘first come first served’ basis before the closing date 31 March 2007 (by 7.00 pm).

08.03.07 - Benefits of Chess in Education Lecture for Singapore Schools

ASEAN Chess Academy invites the staff of Singapore schools to contact us to arrange for the delivery of a free lecture on the Benefits of Chess in Education. The lecture by ACA’s specialists is for all schools interested in building chess clubs or signing up for chess training. The lecture will give an overview of the latest scientific findings and tap relevant experiences from other countries to suggest strategies in linking chess with the school curriculum in Singapore schools. 05.03.07 - Nanyang Chess Challenge 2007

Besides running chess classes in many schools island-wide, Intchess Asia also conducts chess tournaments at schools to help keep up interest and offer more opportunities for practice and competitive play. So it happened on 3 March 2007, when Nanyang Primary School & Intchess Asia organised the Nanyang Chess Challenge 2007, an intra-school event that attracted 138 entries from Upper and Lower Primary pupils. The Upper Primary section was won by Jordan Yap (6/6), followed by Matthew Chin (5½/6). The Lower Primary section was won by Liu Mu Tian on tiebreak, followed by Joseph Soh and Nicholas Ang. The organisers and parent volunteers offered crystal trophies to the winners, plus many other attractive prizes for fighting spirit, brilliancy, and sportsmanship.

27.02.07 - Junior Chess Scholarships Up For Grabs

Intchess Asia is offering attractive scholarships to 10 Under-12 players to be selected in a challenging tournament coming up in March. The top 5 scholarship holders can even set aside a part of their scholarship fund to travel to and take part in Intchess Asia-endorsed international competitions.

10.02.07 - New Beginners Courses Started in Singapore Schools

Thousands of Primary One pupils island-wide received their very first chess lessons recently. With the beginning of the New Year ACA has restarted the essential task of imparting basic chess knowledge to young pupils in a good number of Singapore ’s Primary Schools. In cases such as Gongshang Primary School and Northland Primary School , (each gathering no fewer than 650 fresh beginners!) chess continues to be a part of the school curriculum. In others, training is offered as a CCA or part of the School’s Chess Club’s yearly activities. We wish all school trainees to have fun and a great time learning!

03.02.07 - FIDE Appoints ASEAN Chess Academy as its Training HQ

It’s official. ASEAN Chess Academy is now the Training Headquarters for FIDE, the World Chess Federation.

The FIDE Presidential Board Meeting decided this in Antalya, Turkey, last week.

As FIDE Training HQ, ACA will oversee the worldwide development of chess education including the training of trainers through the organisation of seminars, examinations, certification of trainers.

In so doing, ACA as FIDE Training HQ will be able to use the FIDE mark and/or logo as part of its marketing and branding efforts.

03.02.07 - FIDE Opens New Office in Singapore

FIDE, the World Chess Federation, is opening a new office in Singapore.

The world body decided this at its Presidential Board Meeting held in Antalya, Turkey, from 26-28 January 2007.

FIDE did this after the Singapore Chess Federation tabled a proposal for such an office at the FIDE Congress held along with the Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy, last May. The SCF proposal had the support of the Singapore Sports Council and the Economic Development Board.

The FIDE Singapore Office shall be located at 7500D Beach Road #03-10/14 The Plaza Block D, Singapore 199594 and will be overseen by Mr Ignatius Leong, General Secretary of FIDE, and staffed by Mr Tang Kum Foo, Administration Manager, who will deal with communications matters with FIDE Commissions and Committees.

25th National Age Group Championships 2007

Between 6th and 14th January 2007, the 25th National Age Group Championships were held at the ASEAN Chess Academy. The 8-round event saw Intchess trainees perform remarkably well. Winners and Playoffs: Dharsha Raja Jawahar (Girls U8), Monisha Raja Jawahar and Yuan Weiting (Girls U10, Playoff), Danielle Ho and Sara-Ann Ang (Girls U12, Playoff), Derek Lim (Boys U8), Calvin Ong, Aloysius Chia, Chen Kai Bin (Boys U10, Playoff), Jordan Yap (Boys U12), Chan Weng Chee, Daniel Chan, Timothy Chan (Open, Playoff). 05.01.07 - GM Zhang Pengxiang wins Singapore Masters 2006

GM Zhang Pengxiang (China) won the Singapore Masters Open (26-30 December 2006) with 7.5 pts out of 9 rounds. The 2nd prize went to GM Wang Hao (China) and the 3rd to GM Zhang Zhong (China). Remarkably, the Chinese players secured 8 out of the top 10 positions in the final standings. The top prize in the Singapore Challengers was won by Pamungkas Junaid (Indonesia) with 7.5 pts, followed by Tan Weiliang (Singapore) with 7.5 pts and Zulfikar Panjaitan (Indonesia) with 7 pts as the final standings show. Congratulations to all winners and participants!
